Sepaton Virtual Tape Libraries for D2D Backup
Sophisticated IT users are now asking for Virtual Tape Library
backup capabilities, and InfraStor is now able to offer Sepaton's range
of VTL appliances with capacities that scale from 4.8TB to multiple
PetaBytes.
The Sepaton Virtual Tape Library (VTL) appliances provide all of the
benefits of a traditional backup system with the benefits of a
host-based D2D system, while removing the problems provided by each.
The Sepaton VTL offers IT administrators a familiar tape technology
interface without the frequent failures of tape-based backup jobs.
Based on Serial ATA Disk RAID: A Sepaton VTL emulates tape libraries
and/or tape formats on disk. It includes the tape emulation server, the
SATA RAID arrays, and a file system optimized for backups. The VTL can
also provide the same media management (tape cataloging, media
expiration etc.) capabilities that the administrator is used to, while
most host-based D2D systems fail in this regard. There are no storage
management tasks. Capacity is dynamically allocated as needed.
Integrated Appliance: Provided as a turnkey appliance, with an
on-site support program included, the Sepaton VTL does not require
changes in the backup software in use today. The VTL is configured and
ready to install into the existing network environment. In most cases,
backups should be possible within 30 minutes.
Issues of disk and file system compatibility, configuration, and
security are not a concern for the IT administrator. When the backup
job runs, it will deposit the data onto the VTL just as it would onto a
tape library, only many times faster. More importantly, data restores
will also be many times faster.
Content Aware Storage: Leveraging their content-aware storage
capabilities, Sepaton VTL's also offer advanced capabilities, including
remote site-to-site replication, content-based compression, synthetic
full backups, and end-user access to backup data.
Virtual Tape -
Use it because a failure of a tape backup isn't just an
"Oops!"…
It's a breach of your Risk Management policies and
SLA's.
Backup Failures Eliminated: With the backup now being performed in a
very short window, a simple migration of the backup data from disk to
tape can be accomplished during regular business hours for off-site
storage. Finally, backup processes that are data-centers' most
failure-prone operations, can be "virtually" guaranteed to
succeed.
The Business Case: The ROI is based on:
- The essential elimination of the costs of failure, including
regulatory penalties
- The ability to guarantee fast, successful restoration of business
critical data
- Reduced administrative overhead costs for backup processes
- Knowledge-worker productivity improvements
- Savings on tape handling
- Savings on outside tape storage and retrieval
- Reduced capital costs for tape drive and robotics upgrades
- Reduced tape hardware maintenance costs
